Kos and its masqueraders (“kamouzeles”)

In the wider area of Kefalos Town and Antimachia (Municipality of Herakleides) the residents still hold on to the Carnival tradition (similar to Halloween) for over half a century. The so called “kamouzeles” or “elafakia” were basically masqueraders who painted their faces with coal dust and dressed-up in woven blankets which were called “chramia”. Then they roamed the village streets teasing the locals and joking around while using their noisemakers which were called “kokala”.
The last Sunday of the Carnival period this tradition is brought once again to life with its noisemakers, masqueraders, lots of traditional music, ouzo, wine and various dishes. As the night ends tradition has it that the “bad spirit” should be burnt.
