Kefalos

Kefalos is 40 kilometres south-western of Kos town and it’s beautiful village build on a hill at the west site of the island. By antiquity it was the first capital city of the island and today it counts some 2.500 permanent residents. Houses here are build so close one to each other that creates narrow streets quite char¬acteristic features of the architecture of the islands, which tempest you for tour in the history and the life of the place. One of the most interesting buildings is the traditional house, a folk museum with all the presentation of the agricultural life of the village in past times and next to
the traditional house, you will see the traditional windmill. The image of the old town compete the ruins of the old castle, just next to the main village. Kamari, in a distance 1 kilometre at the East of Kefalos has a marina which services a lot of yachts and small boats at the summer. At Kamari you can see Early Chris¬tian basilicas of Agios Stefanos, dating back to the 5th century; there are preserved parts of the mosaic decoration as well as remnants of the sculpture decoration of the churches. In short distance across, quite close to the coast, there is the islet of Kastri with the small church of Agios Nicolaos, the protector of nautical. At place Palatia, 3 kilometres south you will see the ruins of ancient capital of the island Astipalea, the ruins of a temple of Dimitra, the goddess of agriculture (5th century b.C). One temple of Asklipios, a newer Doric temple and a theatre of the Hellenistic period. Upon a hill you may also visit the Panagia Palatiani church dedicated to Virgin Mary from where you will have an excellent view of Kefalos and of the sea below. The church of the Panagia Ziniotisa also with beautiful view is at Zini 1-2 kilometres southern to Palatia. The Aspri Tripa cave is a little bit farther of Panagias with finds of the Neolithic period and also of recent times. Just 7 kilometres from Kefalos is the Holy Monastery of Agios Ioannis (St. John) with main characteristic the perennial plane tree, covering al¬most totally the small church and reaching even the nearby bell tower. 11 kilometres southern you will meet the ruins of the small church of Agios Mamantos right next to the homonymous new one without forget telling you about the beautiful view you will have at the sea. 5 kilometres north from Kefalos, you may visit the small cove of Limnionas, with a small port, a shelter for the small fishing and tourist boats in case of rough sea. 7 kilometres south-west there is the country church of Agios Theologos with beautiful small coves and rocky beaches. Disadvantage the dirt road (about 5 kilometres) which if you cross it you will not only see the cute church, but also you will enjoy some nice beaches, where you will meet few people, or you will be alone. Several accommodation possibilities in Kefalos and the food are good, both in the sea front taverns and in the inland ones. For sure you have to taste the local sweets, above all those made with the famous local honey. At the several beautiful beaches at Kamari and the beaches at the Kefalos cove: Chrisi Akti, Polemi, San Beach, Xerokampos, Laggades, Paradise, Camel, you’ll enjoy swimming and sun bathing. It will be good to visit Kefalos in July or August, so you wont miss the local festivals on the 26th of July in honour of Agia Paraskevi, on the 15th of August, celebrating the Assumption of Virgin Mary and on the 29th of August in honour of Agios Ioannis (St. John), in October it is organized the tour of Kefalos and during the Carnival in February or March, the locals and the few tourists have the chance to have fun at the local Carnival feast. In Kefalos is a Police Station and in case of health problems a local Medical Centre is available at the town. Access from Kos town (40 kilometres far away) is possible with public bus, by car and motorbike.
