Kardamena

Kardamena is a modern tourist resort, at a distance of 29 kilometres South¬-western of Kos town with about 1800 permanent residents. Houses and other constructions have been built along the long beach extended at both sides of the settlement and the area around is very beautiful, full of culti¬vations, trees and green and the natural beauty is one of the attractions of the place. The town has also a small port, from where there is connection with the small island of Nisiros. At Kardamena you can admire the old rebuild building that lodges Rustic Clinic and to see the churches of Agia Varvara,
Agion Anargiron and Panagia... Today’s Kardamena is build at the area of the ancient city of Alasarna, an important ritual place in Classical Period. At the ruins that archaeological excavations have brought to light there is a sanctuary dedicated to Apollo and Hercules, some traces of a temple of marble dating back to the 3rd century b.C., a theatre and a few constructions of the Roman era. Within the same area you may also see the ruins of the Christian basilica dedicated to Agia Theotita (Saint Divinity). A lot of possibilities for accommodation at the area and also you will find good food at the fish-house taverns, traditional taverns and restaurants with Greek and European cuisine. You will enjoy swimming, sunbathing and sea sports at the long sandy beach of Kardamena. You may also catch the excursion boat, departing daily to Agia Irini, where you will also find ther¬mal springs, suitable for gynaecological problems. Every summer at Kardamena they have the Alasarnia with a lot of cultural events, theatrical shows, concerts, visual art exhibitions, traditional dances, scientific conferences and speeches, several competitions (cycling, chess etc) and the nautical week. In Kardamena they honour Agio Ioanni (St. John) on the 29th of August and Theotoko on the 8th of September with lots of festivals. For health problems a local Medical Centre and a drugstore is available in the village. Access from Kos town (29 kilometres) is easy by public buses, by taxi, by car and motorbike. Taxis are available also from the village and, as Kardamena is at the middle of the village, they will get you everywhere. If you have a yacht, the port of Kardamena is suitable both for mooring and water and fuel supply.
