Asfendiou is situated at a distance of 14 kilometres south-western from Kos town, at the mountainside of mountain Dikeo, within an environment with luxuriant green. It is counting some 100 permanent residents and according to the history the old village flourished for the ages 1850 to 1940. Asfendiou thanks to viniculture and olive-crop is very interesting for its architecture with tow different neighbourhoods, Evangelistria or Pera Gitonia and Asomatos. Close to the village there are the small beautiful villages Zia, Agios Dimitrios, Zipari, Tiggaki, Linopoti and Lagoudi. At Asfendiou, it is worth seeing the church of Asomaton Taxiarchon of 11th cen¬tury, with a very nice wooden temple and the ruins of the Early Christian basilica of Agios Pavlos (St. Paul) just a little bit outside the village. If you get to the top of mountain Dikeos, at a height of 840 about meters, you will have the chance to see the small church of Christ and to take wonderful photos of a panoramic view of the island. About 2 kilometres south there is the little mountain village Zia at the mountainside of Dikeos with a fantastic view which is pole of attraction for many visitors, tourists, Greek holidayers and local excursionists. At Zia, you will have the opportunity to buy souvenirs, mainly folk-art artefacts but also to enjoy local and Greek cuisine by the many Greek restaurants and traditional taverns that offers big variety. At the road going to the village, you will also have the chance to see three interesting churches at the foot of mountain Dikeos. The churches Kefalovrisi, the Isodion and Kimisis tis Theotokou all of them founded by Saint Christodoulos.
Also at Lagoudi village (1 kilometre west) you will find the church of Agio Ioanni of Theologou which is built in the rocks and in a small distance of the village at the top of a small hill there is the little church of Profiti Ilia (Prophet Ilias). If you like churches, you may also visit the church of Agios Ioannis Theologos (St. John the Evan¬gelist), built in the rocks, at the small village of Lagoudi (some 1 kilometre western to Asfendiou), and the small church of Prophet Elias at the top of a hill very close to Asfendiou.
Accommodation it’s possible at this beautiful village. If you stay here, you will swim at the nice and well-organized beach of Tiggaki, which is found at a short distance from the village. If you are in the area at a good season you will enjoy the local festivals, at Zipari on the 6th of August celebrat¬ing the Metamorfosi tou Sotiros, at Agios Dimitrios on the 26th of October, in honour of the Agiou Georgiou (St. George) at the Dasaki ton Mavrokampion and in April at Lagoudi on the 8th of May in honour of Agios Ioannis Theologos (St. John the Evangelist). In case of health problems, a local Medical Centre and a drugstore are available at Zipari. Access from Kos town is easy by public bus, by taxi, by car and by motorbike.
