Antimachia

23 kilometres south western from Kos town and 4 kilometres southern of Mastichari, it the scenic village of Antimachia. A traditional village of the island built on a plateau not very high. It has about 2.200 permanent residents, occupied in agriculture and tourism. Antimachia is an ancient settlement and holding the same name for more than three thousand years. Here you can see a lot of beautiful and interesting sights of which the most important is the «House of Antimachia», a good representation of the tradi¬tional house of the early 20th century. Right opposite to the house you will find the Milos tou
Papa (the priest’s mill) an old traditional windmill. 4 kilometres North-eastern from the village, via a good dirt road, you can visit the ruins of the Medieval Castle (14th century) of the order of the Knights of St. John, who also dominated Rodos. There you can see its external strong walls that are saved in a good condition, a lot of castle-houses and water tanks of those ages. Also at the inner of the castle you can see the old churches of Agios Nikolaos (16th century) and of Agia Paraskevi (18th century), both of them well enough preserved and at Mastichari . You will see the ruins of the Early Christian Basilica, with a very nice mosaic floor. Several alternatives for accommodation at Antimachia and in the area around. You will find very good food at the village although more popular are the fish-houses taverns at close Mastichari, with really fresh fish but also with very tasteful local titbits. Visitors can have there swim, enjoy there sunbathing and have fan with lots of water sports at the well organized beach of Mastichari. Antimachia has an ancient history and a beautiful environment to offer at her visitors, but also is well known for the openhearted locals who are famous from many years ago as very good dancers and singers. We have to inform you also that some of them are the best folk musicians all over Greece. They are also known for their ability to improvise verses, satirical in most cases. If you are on the island during the period of Carnival, don’t miss the Antimachia’s Carnival. It will remain to you unforgettable! Traditional also the festivals on 15nth of August in honour of the Assumption of Virgin Mary. And the Agion Apostolon on 30nth of June at Antimachia. But the top of all is the Giorti tou Meliou (Feast of Honey), taking place in late August and apart from dancing, singing and enjoying yourself, you will also have the chance to taste the very good honey of the area, along with a variety of sweets, based on this excellent product of the village. Another important event that everybody expects is the Wine Festival taking place in early September with lots of local wine, titbits of the local kitchen and you will enjoy yourself with Greek music and dance, which lasts until the next morning. Extraordinary medical incidents are covered from a local Medical Centre of the village where you will also find a Police Station. Access from Kos town is easy by public buses, running frequently (Kos- Antimachia- Masti¬chari), by taxi and by car and motorbikes. Also from the port of Mastichari (some 4 kilometres northern to Antimachia), you may catch the boat for Kalimnos (boats depart regularly every day) unless you have a yacht, the port of Mastichari is available for mooring.
