Kos is located in the south-eastern Aegean Sea south of Kalimnos and north of Nisiros at the ancient Keramiko gulf (Kerme Körfezi) or Kos gulf and it abstains just 3 naval miles from Asia Minor coasts. It is the third largest island in the Dodecanese it has extent 290, 29 kilometres and the circumnavigation of island is calculated in the 60 naval miles. The big explosion happened 160,000 years ago between Nisiros and Kefalos it had as a result to cover half of the island of Kos, in the western part, with a layer of ash and kisiris thickness of about 30 meters.
