Kos is located in the south-eastern Aegean Sea south of Kalimnos and north of Nisiros at the ancient Keramiko gulf (Kerme Körfezi) or Kos gulf and it abstains just 3 naval miles from Asia Minor coasts. It is the third largest island in the Dodecanese it has extent 290, 29 kilometres and the circumnavigation of island is calculated in the 60 naval miles. It was from the prehistoric times an important channel of the sea ways that started from the Black Sea and along the shoreline of Asia Minor and the islands of Aegean it reached the North Africa. Kos is the birthplace of the father of medicine, Hippocrates, which was born in the island round 460 B.C. and founded the Great School of Medicine of Kos. The island is famous for its tight vegetation and for its temperate climate and it was characterized by the Roman doctor Gallino as "the most temperate place in the world". The morphology of the ground varies and it is the result of long-lasting geological changes and it is particularly owed in the volcanic activity of the known Aegean Arc (Nisiros, Thira, Milos, Methana). According to the latest geological studies seven volcanoes located in the space between Nisiros and Kos and one of them is inactive today in the Isthmus of Kefalos. The big explosion happened 160,000 years ago between Nisiros and Kefalos it had as a result to cover half of the island of Kos, in the western part, with a layer of ash and kisiris thickness of about 30 meters. In the volcanic origin of Kos is owed the fertility of the ground, which had been known since antiquity and has left the proverbial phrase whom Kos can’t nourish Egypt can’t either.
